Grist
Grist combines a spreadsheet interface with relational records, reference columns, formulas, forms, granular access rules, and Python extensibility. The Apache-2.0 Grist Community edition is free to self-host, while Grist also provides managed hosting and commercial editions with additional administration features.
Why use it
It is a strong choice because many indie teams already track budgets, assets, test matrices, and launch checklists in spreadsheets but lack reliable relations and permissions. Producers keep the familiar row-and-column model while linking characters, tasks, vendors, costs, and releases into filtered views and controlled forms; exportable data and a deployable community edition reduce dependence on one SaaS vendor.
Where it fits

What to check
Apache-2.0 covers grist-core, desktop, and static repositories, while parts of the full official edition use other terms for administration, automation, and enterprise features. Hosted free and self-hosted offerings differ in capability and capacity, and formulas, access rules, Python code, and backups still need technical review. A production register should not become the sole accounting or legal record.
