Pixelmash
Pixelmash combines per-pixel painting with vector shapes and high-resolution layers that are pixelated live, adding palette, dithering, outline, auto-shade, parented layers, keyframes, onion skinning, sprite-sheet, and 9-slice tools for game assets.
Why use it
It is selected because one editable source can produce multiple resolutions, palettes, equipment colors, and animation states instead of repainting every pixel version; the 2026.1 9-slice workflow and animatable layer effects are particularly useful for UI panels, platform tiles, and skill effects whose corners must remain crisp.
Where it fits
Use art, animation, audio, levels, and narrative to make the game easy to read and its world convincing.
What to check
A direct purchase is a perpetual license with one year of updates, after which newer builds require an update extension; Mac App Store, Steam, and other channels use separate licensing and registration. The software license does not clear imported fonts, SVGs, photos, or references, and automated pixelization still needs manual checks for silhouettes, palettes, frame shimmer, and engine slicing.
