Luau
An open language, VM, and tool suite evolved from Lua 5.1 with fast bytecode, incremental garbage collection, optional JIT, gradual type checking, linting, and an embedder-facing C API.
Why use it
Engines supporting player scripts, mods, or large gameplay codebases gain performance, editor diagnostics, controlled host APIs, and a type system that reduces maintenance cost as scripts grow.
Where it fits
Find engines, frameworks, code libraries, version control, and production automation.
What to check
It is not a complete superset of later Lua versions, so libraries may need porting; security still depends on restricted host APIs plus correct bytecode signing, memory, timeout, and environment isolation.
